Why Us?

Our approach, rooted in the wisdom of the canoe, embodies unity, respect, and boundless potential, offering a unique perspective shaped by our Métis heritage and deep connections to the land.

Our Approach

Equity, Dialogue, Water

Our approach is deeply rooted in the wisdom of the canoe. Whether we find ourselves physically navigating the waters, exploring the land, or engaging in virtual discussions, the canoe shares invaluable teachings. Effective canoeing demands equitable dialogue, teamwork, and unwavering respect for one another's differences. When paddlers meet these requirements, the canoe becomes a powerful force, able to span oceans and continents and reshape global trade. However, if these principles are not upheld, the canoe's functionality diminishes. From a complete standstill to boundless possibilities, the canoe's destiny lies in the hands of those who harness its potential. Our work is guided by this framework, interwoven with the principles of OCAP (Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession), a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and a deep respect for Indigenous methodologies and pedagogies.

Our Expertise

Land- based, climate focused research

As Métis women, our roots extend deep into the shores of the Great Lakes and the surrounding waterways, forging an intimate connection with the land and its waters. Our extensive hours navigating the canoe along historic trade routes have afforded us a unique perspective, allowing us to empathize with the challenges our ancestors confronted, a perspective few can fully appreciate. The Métis tradition encompasses a rich history of bridging linguistic and cultural divides, serving as interpreters between diverse worldviews. In our role as contemporary interpreters, we draw from a wellspring of knowledge passed down through generations, gathered from the land itself, and cultivated through a blend of Indigenous and Western educational experiences.
